Here are some handy apps to download before you travel, so that you can make the most out of your experience! All of these apps are free to download, and available on both Apple and Android devices so that everyone can enjoy them.
1) Uber
Although most people have this on their phone already, it can be so helpful. Ubers tend to be cheaper than hailing a cab, and cab drivers in Peru can often be unlicensed and therefore potentially unsafe. With Uber, you know exactly what you need to pay, that the driver is registered on the app and the transaction can be done online through your bank card if you do not have cash.
2) SpanishDict
This is the perfect app to help travelers who do not speak Spanish! The app works without the internet to translate single words, although wifi or data is needed if you are looking to translate whole sentences or phrases.
3) Duolingo
For those who want to learn how to speak Spanish, not just communicate where necessary, Duolingo is one of the most popular free learning apps on the market. It is easy to use and understand, and you can learn at your own pace.
4) Habla Quechua
Quechua is the local native language and spoken by around 3 million Peruvians throughout the country. If you are into languages and want to communicate with the locals, this app is amazing. It was designed by the government and although you can’t master the Quechua language using this, it covers all of the basics you will need, and there are not many free Quechua learning resources out there, so this is a great option.
5) Google Maps
Another oldie but a goodie, Google Maps will help you when you’re winding your way around town, and can’t remember the correct turn to get back to your accommodation. The app also offers simple reviews of nearby restaurants and attractions, so you can have a look before you head over.
6) Snapseed
Although there are a number of free photo editing apps on the market, snapseed is one of the best. This free app will allow you to subtly edit all of your pictures so that even the great ones turn out perfect.
7) Tripadvisor
This app does so many different things, you’ll find yourself reaching for it over and over again. On Trip Advisor, you can find reviews on places to eat, places to stay, and things to do. You get information about the cost, the value, and just how well other people thought it was. You can also book things like accommodation directly through the site, perfect for last-minute travelers.
8) Whatsapp
This is one of the most common forms of communication here in Peru, and the best thing about it is that it’s free! You can use it to keep in touch with people that you meet, but you can also use it to talk to people back home as well. Although it does require internet access to send and receive messages, you can call, text and video chat with people anywhere around the world, without having to pay international roaming fees.
9) XE Currency
Initially, it can be confusing trying to convert soles into your home currency and work out whether you really are getting a good bargain or not. This app will do the conversions for you, is frequently updating the conversion rates that it uses, and can work even when offline.
10) Rappi
This is a food delivery service similar to Uber Eats. If you are just too tired to leave your accommodation, Rappi has a wide selection of restaurants and fast-food joints that can be delivered right to your door. Although it is not available everywhere in Peru, it is found in all major towns and cities.
