How long does it take to walk up to Machu Picchu?

Well, as said on other occasions, Peru is fortunate to have countless tourist attractions. There are so many possibilities that mentioning just one is even ungenerous; however, Cusco is for the moment, and talking of tourism, the icon of the country

But Cusco even has many wonderful places to see and enjoy.  Since the arrival you will be transported to the magic.  The complete city and surroundings are so different than other enigmatic places in the world, that you will be almost dreaming.

Now, going from Aguas Calientes town (where trains arrive) to Machu Picchu hiking is another thing.  The road that leads to Machu Picchu is called ‘Hiram Bingham’, in honor of the American explorer who arrived in the Inca city in 1911. Although most tourists go by bus, there are a few visitors who dare to walk from the town of Aguas Calientes to Machu Picchu. This short walk is safe but exhausting. The tour takes approximately 2 hours. During this first trip the tourist will appreciate the Machu Picchu Site Museum as well as the butterfly garden of the place. After finding the beginning of the trail, hundreds of stone steps must be traveled.

As you ascend, the road will cross up 3 times with the right end of the road.

At the intersections of the road, the visitor must follow the path until they find a new stone staircase path.

The road is clearly marked. In some sections it is possible to meet locals who sell snacks and drinks.

After approximately the two hours of ascent, you will arrive at the entrance door of Machu Picchu. The time varies according to the physical condition of the visitor and his pace of ascent.

Other well-known way to hike up to Machu Picchu is making the 2days/1night program trek.  You have to know that this option has to be done always with a tourist guide, never alone as that is not permit.

Continue with an exclusive picnic lunch is ready for you then keep on through steep stairs for about 1.5 hours to reach the Sun’s Gate or Intipunku. Be rewarded with astonishing views of Machu Picchu and the surrounding valley. Following, we will initiate the hike down to Machu Picchu. Have a glimpse of the surreal sunset and then be transferred to your hotel.

The second day is the day when your dreams will come true, you will know the wonder of the modern world.  You will leave the town and travel by bus (20min) to arrive to the citadel. Once in Machu Picchu, the stories, enigmas as well as nature and architecture will be the most beautiful experience ever in your whole trip. After the guided tour, you can explore by yourself to take pictures or revisit the ruins. 

This beautiful day ends with a delightful lunch at the Belmond Sanctuary Lodge Hotel and the bus back to Aguas Calientes. The train will take you back to Cusco to meet our representative and end this adventure.
