Sillustani, known as the largest necropolis in the world, is a captivating archaeological site that boasts impressive landscapes and breathtaking views of the Andean nature. Located 34 km northwest of Puno, at an altitude of 3,840 meters, this enchanting place is home to the gigantic Chullpas, or funeral towers, constructed from stone. The Chullpas were built by the Collas in the 12th century and later by the Incas, who gained control of the area.
Both civilizations devoted themselves to the construction of this cemetery to respectfully bury their dead, allowing them to embark on their new life or rebirth, as per their beliefs. The most prominent Chullpas were reserved for important chiefs and priests. The Collas and Incas carefully selected sacred and breathtaking sites to build their cemeteries.
Sillustani is a magical place that envelops visitors with its unique charm and energy, instilling a sense of peace and harmony. The stunning landscape, with mountains reflected in the Umayo lagoon, creates a mirror-like effect, adding to the site’s allure and tranquility.
