Nowadays Sillustani is known as the largest necropolis in the world, surrounded by impressive landscapes and gorgeous views of Andean nature. It is located 34 km north-west of the city of Puno (50 minutes by road) and 3,840m above sea level. What definitely stands out at this place are the gigantic Chullpas, which are funeral towers made of stone.
This was a resting place built by Collas in the 12th century and later on by the Incas that gain domain in the area, they both devoted to the construction of this cemetery to respectfully bury their dead so they can walk into their new life or rebirth as part of their own conception, where the most prominent Chullpas were built for important chiefs and priests. They have chosen breathtaking sites to build their cemeteries as these were considered sacred places.
It is a magical place that will envelop you with its charm and energy that fills you with peace and harmony thanks to the unique landscape surrounded by mountains reflected in the lagoon Umayo as a mirror.
